Frog sighting :)

I've seen a newt in our pond (well actually I scooped it out with a handful of gunk from the bottom when I was checking the depth of our pond after we moved in) but not seen it since then (of course I put him straight back in after squeaking with excitement and showing thecatsfather!). I've seen a toad in the wood pile by the shed, and I've seen a handsome frog behind my containers in a shady corner about 15ft from the pond:

 But today I saw froggie actually in the pond  - this was very exciting image

 After I took the photo I touched the leaves and he swam away looking really cute

    trying to cool off perhaps. I'd try it but the smell would be really bad

    TCM that's lovely! Great pix and very clever little graphics on your post! When we bought our last house the owners told us 'never seen any frogs ' despite there being one huge pond and a smaller one. We couldn't understand it, and we laughed when we started working on the garden because it was full  of frogs and toads! Not sure they ever went out in it!!

    Nut - I'm a little confused - what smell!!....image

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    it's just ground water, not lined. years of growth melting down

    Our pond is only about 30cm deep so definitely no fishes, but newts and frogs and toads will do me fine image (even though the cats would like to have a fishpond all of their very own....image). Years of growth would fill it up so I'll need to keep an eye on sludge levels and keep on top of leaves etc. I really want to see our newt again - hope it's OK.....

    The smaller pond we had was really clogged and sludgy TCM. It had been very neglected and you wouldn't even have known there was a pond there. We cleared it all and tidied up all the surroundings. It wasn't very deep either so we took a lot of the sludge out which made a huge difference, and there was plenty of wildlife in it. It's a lovely thing to have in the garden.

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Nice pics TCM.

    That frog in the pond though... does anyone else think that frogs' noses are getting pointier as the years go by? I saw a frog in my garden this morning, before reading this post, and was struck by how pointed its nose was.

    Or is it just garden madness eating at my brain?

    I might pong as well Fg with all the sweating I've done today.

    It would be good to have a clearout of the ponds but it's they're quite big and I can't reach nearly to the middle. And I have to think about all the dragonfly larvae in there.

    We don't have a pond at all, neither do our next door neighbours but our garden seems to be overun (almost) with frogs from baby ones no more than an inch long to more mature ones 3 inches long (front to back). Lovely sight to see and great to know they are keeping a lot of the pests at bay. 2 grand-daughters aged 10 & 12 love to go froggy hunting when they come round to see us and get very excited when they find one. A couple have found my Hoselock watering tray in the greenhouse and have made it their home for the present (I'll have to be very careful when the tomatoes have finished & I need to tidy up for the winter).

    I remember when my two were that age and they brought home tadpoles - they were thrilled when one day a little frog appeared.  I don't remember what happened to the frog and we didn't have a pond.  Last year, many years and two gardens later, I jumped and let out a shriek when something moved when I lifted a polythene bag in the garden.  When I realised it was a toad I felt so bad for frightening and disturbing it.  It just froze and when I backed slowly away It took a huge leap and I didn't see it again - but I'm sure I hear toads or frogs croaking from time to time.  I also have a resident hedgehog family - this will be their fourth year.  I'd like to think it's the same ones but I can't be sure.     Look! Look! Went out this evening and he (or maybe another one, seemed smaller) was sat on a lily pad - how cute is that image
