Talkback: How to plant a fig tree
How can I protect 3 foot high avocado trees which I have grown from "seed" this year.I go away for the winter(3 months). The plants are in sheltered corners.Should I smother them in compost or horse manure..for warmth or surround with a coat of bubble wrap ?
or bury under lots of garden cuttings..branches & the like?
Any suggestions

There was soil at the bottom and he tipped the rubble on top of the soil.
A hole about a metre by a metre a metre will do the job. As Dove says, spread the rubble on top of the soil in the bottom of the hole. It will help to contain the roots, the whole point of the exercise. Mine, planted about three years ago, is about 8' high and won't get much taller. Now it's a matter of encouraging lateral growth.
