I have a great tip for the non-squeamish... because our local council has a totally insane fortnightly bin collection service, we get a large problem in the Summer months where we get weekly blooms of maggots crawling out of the bin. I collect these up and put them out for the birds, who go absolutely nuts for them!
The maggots can also be left to pupae and then added to suet balls together with mealworms, oats, seeds and nuts for a nutritious winter snack for the birds.
I made a suet, seed, fat mixture and refilled 1/2 coconuts with it and hung them out for the birds. They loved them, unfortunately the squirrels on every occasion managed to remove the tasty block from the coconuts and make off with them. Very amusing to see them running away with something bigger than their heads but annoying none the less
A man told me once with a nod and a wink to never put chilli powder or paprika in suet etc bird feed because the squirrels hate it, but the birds are OK. My bird feeders are now hung with wired because the squirrels kept stealing the ones hung with string
That's why I only use suet blocks in those hanging wire thingies, Lulu. They'll steal anything
Steven - I think you mean to put chilli powder into the bird food - not leave it out!
Squirrels will wreck plastic feeders very quickly. I only use sturdy metal ones, and they're wired onto tree branches because they'll pull them off if attached with anything less substantial.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I usually let a teasel grow each year Jimmy. The goldfinches love it.
