Ants nesting in my mint tub!!

I have a half barrel with mint growing in it and has now become home to a nest of ants. Having read that ants don't like mint, I think I should give them a copy of the gardening handbook because they obviously haven't read it!!

I can't use any chemicals because I harvest the mint to make my own mint sauce so if anybody has any ideas, please, please share them!!

Nesting ants means dry soil or compost so give it a thorough soaking morning and evening for a couple of days and then pour on a solution of one small bottle of essential oil of cloves mixed into 5 litres of water.  It will permeate the compost and they will move away as they can't stand the smell and you can continue to harvest your mint.

It's Pennyroyal that ants don't like, not mint.

  • Is there anyway you could put the barrel in a drip tray?  that way you could keep the tray filled with water all the time and the ants will move out.  You can't overwater mint, it grows in our pond!

Might be a silly question, but what do you have against ants in your mint pot?
