Gardeners World ... 'Hatchet' job on Bamboo!!

BorindaBorinda Posts: 1

After filming for around 2 hours at one on the National Bamboo collections in Cornwall belonging to Mike Bell, the 4 minute feature which finally appeared was simply designed to reinforce all of the misconceptions within horticulture regarding their cultivation.

The slot comprised of a couple of horror stories about plants like Sasa palmata 'Nebulosa' escaping their containers and destroying all in their path! No mention was made of clumping species or indeed any hints or tips on sensible cultivation....on no wait, yes Monty stuck a potentially enourmous Nigra henonis into a square metal pot with an inward facing lip! - lets hope he has an angle grinder handy when he come to repot it... not that it will live that long if he only waters it once a week during the summer.

If you'd like to learn more about bamboo ... read a book. Mike Bell and Paul Whittaker are well worth a look.

I agree we have just got rid of some bamboo and what a job it has been, clumps knotted together roots about two fleet deep which creeped halfway under the shed, it was a nightmare.

the only thing I can say is they provided a great screen and they looked good bending and waving in the breeze.

i would say bamboo is great for screening but only if you can afford the room it takes up and can be 100% sure you never want to dig it up.
