corms, tubers or what?

I dug these up 3 weeks ago (replanted them so hope they're not weeds)

each of the bulgy bits is about an inch long, some a bit more, some a bit less. There was no top growth at all but they look and feel quite alive, not dried out or soft and squidgy.

    Maybe Kniphofia red hot pokers, or poss Bergenia elephants ears, or some blinking weird thing like a Dahlia image

    Thanks KEF. I've been trying very hard to remember what had grown there in the past. It's right at the front in a sunny spot so it must be something that I thought would like it there. It won't be a dahlia, I don't like dahlias. Not a bergenia, I know what the bottom of those looks like. Knifophia? hum. If they are then I think they're dead. All my knifiophias are well in leaf, if not flower.

    Erm, I have some of these in an old, out of the way pot in my garden. I've been trying to ignore them in the hope that they will grow into something or get eaten by something, but they have just sat there for months. I seem to remember planting freesias in the pot once upon a time - do you think they could be that? Lord, I hope they aren't a set of digits... I haven't seen the window cleaner for weeks...

    They are weird looking, I can see your toe and nail addict, hadn't spotted that before

    Maybe from a Yukka or Phormium.

    But really look like something Hannibal Lecter would fry....nice Chianti anyone?image

    The previous owner was a widower, I wonder what happened to his wife.

    I think I need to look through my list of plants acquired over the last 20 years and work out what happened to them all and what it might be. 

    Thanks Jim, I've already got a long list of what it isn't. For a moment I thought I'd got it. There are some of those little Oxalis adenophyllla around there, then remembered they're hairy corms and not like these at all
