Goldcrests are insect eaters... try mealworms

  • I did put some out the next day!  Haven't seen them again but it is so cold and very windy here today!

  • We have two wagtails.a wren and the odd robin visit .the wagtails wait at the back door for their dried meal worm.

we also have the dreaded starling which will devour every thing we put out,

How can we feed the wagtails without the starling population

  • Difficult.  It's usually collared doves, pigeons and magpies we try not to feed!  We have moved our bird table now after not having one for some months and the birds we have had so far are the ones we want!  Blue tits, great tits, robins, wrens, blackbirds a goldfinch and the gold crests.  I bet none of them will come for the birdwatch weekend though!!

We feed the starlings few.  They're on the RSPB's amber list because their numbers are declining so rapidly.

I think that it's probably no coincidence that there's an increase in reports of leatherjacket damage to lawns at the same time that starlings are declining. image

  • What does leatherjacket damage look like on lawns?

  • I don't mind starlings and we used to have loads of sparrows but have not seen one since we put the new bird table out.

  • Sadly the two gardens on either side of us have been cleared almost completely over the last year and have lawns and only the odd tree or plant where they used to full of wonderful plants and trees for all wildlife!
