I planted a semicircle of Betula jaqumontii a couple of winters ago. They were planted at the top end of a south-west sloping field in front of a copse of Holly oaks. The idea is that the white stems of the birch will show up against the dark evergreen foliage of the oaks. The circle is about 14m diameter and from memory the trees (3L potted from Parkers Wholesale) were set about 12 feet apart. I have now come to the conclusion that it needs more trees for greater impact so I plan to insert at least two more trees between each of the existing ones.
I am looking for a source of B. jaqumontiii bare root to carry out this plan but am slightly dismayed as to how expensive they seem to be, I paid £8.50 each for my original trees but even bare root transplants seem to be more than this now. Does anyone know a source of Betula transplants at a reasonable price? I'm going to need about 25.
I wonder if your handle means you like tea, Tetley? Nothing better than a brew when gardening!
I am super excited about growing more trees in my garden- your design sounds lovely, Steve. I think growing from seed might be the cheapest way and what a joy it is to see that seed become a tree!
I will plant the birches 6 to 8 feet apart- can't wait for those deep purple leaves against the white bark....
