Scale Insects on my rose

I've just noted scale insects on my climbing rose.

Is there a simple way of getting rid of them without using insecticide ?

I has this problem on my acer earlier this year. I made a mix with fairy liquid and water in a bottle, mixed it by shaking, then used the foam only from the top only to wash them off with an old cloth and paper towels to dry it after. I've checked today and it's still clear of the pests, although washing the stems in this way with a rose bush is obviously going to be harder because of the prickles. Maybe you could use an old sponge instead of the cloth. Let us know what you choose and the results anyway.
