Cordened Blenheim Orange

Hi there,

This year I cordoned four Blenheim Orange apple trees in our small garden in Brighton. I cemented posts into the ground and have run wires between them so that there are plenty of support options. When planted the trees were 2 years old and of the M9 variety. They are positioned on a sunny south facing wall.

My question is regarding pruning. As you can see from the images, the main stems are tied to thick canes at 45 degrees but there are a lot of woody branches coming off at the sides. Should I be attaching these to the wire support system so that they grow up the wall? Or should I be cutting them right back? Or perhaps both - attaching the branches to the wire support system and cutting back any new growth?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mark
