Plant problem

Hi,

I was wondering if there's anyone out there who could help me. My neighbour has a problem with her plant, I can't remeber the name of the plant sorry but please see photo's. There are what look like burn marks on the blades, which always appear in two's. So I'm guessing it happens as the blade is young and as they grow and open out they leave holes. Does anybody know what the problem is and how to prevent it? Thanks.

Your neighbour's plant is a  phormium. It is probably slugs or snails which are eating through the leaves when they emerge, young and folded. As they are bitten through when they are folded it gives the double hole effect. Actively looking for and removing the slugs and snails in spring which have probably been overwintering under the old leaves is probably the best optionor scattering slug pellets...
