Lavenders in containers leaves going yellow

Hi,

I've got several lavenders in pots and on some the leaves are turning yellow.

I've read a couple of articles where it says this can be caused by under or over watering ...

Any idea which is more likely to be the case or could it be something else?

I tend to give them 2 or 3 good waters a week.

I'd go for over watering Nigel, lavenders thrive in a hot, dry spot and well drained 'Mediterranean ' soil.

I agree with PaulaH and if they're not in a free-draining gritty compost I'd repot them now.

I grow lavender in pots and usually wait for them to droop slightly before I water them.

Could be a combination of too much water or nutrient  deficiency. How large is the container relative to plant?

Containers are terracota around 15inch diameter. The oldest plant is around 1.5 years old so I don't think they should be pot bound.

Nigel, those pots should be all right for the moment. What sort of mix do you have in the pots? I agree with the others (above). The mix needs to be very very well drained. Lavender thrives in dry conditions. If the roots become waterlogged, the plant is history.

I put plenty of grit into the pots when they were planted up and when I water they seem to drain freely.

Okay, try cutting back on the watering.

Have you got them planted in multi purpose? Even with added grit they don't really like it. John Innes no 3 is ideal for med plants.
