Little Yellow Flowers on my Purple Wave Petunias

I cannot find anything on the web about this. I have to assume that the seeds are something I can replant. Curious as to why my purple petunias are putting out little yellow flowers with the pods, the pods are splitting open and tiny black seeds are all over. I thought that after the regular flowers dried up there was supposed to be seeds but they just dry up and I pull them off and throw them away and more nice puple flowers just keep coming. It's mid summer here now and they are doing quite well.

Can I remove these flowers and pods and keep the seeds till next spring and replant after I get them started?

I thought I would just shake the seeds out of the pods and put them in a small glassine envelope and keep them in a plastic pill container. Any comments about this?

Should I just sow them early after the last frost?

Two issues here then, your yellow flowers making seeds, petunia not, some trailing petunias dont make seed, they grow from cuttings. Whatever the yellow flowers are, they are not off your purple petunia, you can save the seeds and grow them in the spring, mind they are not weeds though.

     a photo would help.

I have just dead headed my trailing petunias and can now see what you thought were yellow 5 petal flowers, thet are the green bit that the purple flower comes out of, if you only take of the dead flower or if it drops off on its own, the green bit behind turns yellow as it dies, its not a flower.

I found one that missed getting pulled off.yours must be the type that do produce seed so if you want to save some, plant in a seed tray next March, they wont all come true to the colour but you will get some nice variation.

I saved seed from a black one and some are black, some deep purple, burgandy all nice dark colours, so have a go.

If you let the plant set seed it will weaken it, and it may stop flowering. If you deadhead the flower (cut it off)when they fade, along with a bit of the flower stalk, you will get a lot more flowers.image
