HELP! Something is growing on the terracotta Pot!
Hello All,
I have transferred my little avocado plant onto a new terracotta pot (that I have washed and scrubbed before planting) a few days ago. Now, after its been planted I found this white mildew-like growth all over the pot.
Does anybody know what this is?
And how can I remedy the situation?
Looking forward to your responses!
Thank you,
Dalia

It looks just like the salts that come out of bricks on houses. The moisture drives the salts out if the clay. Nothing to worry about.
Thank you Pansyface! It makes sense now that I think about it.
Have a nice day!
I can confirm what pansyface says. Big old terracotta pots in gardens often have that white deposit on them. A lot of people like them like that, gives them an antique character look.
There was a thread about this a couple of weeks ago - which I can't seem to find now - in which we concluded the same. BUT this looks different
This is the other thread http://www.gardenersworld.com/forum/problem-solving/removing-mould-on-plant-pots/854525.html
I think it looks different because it's 'new' - as it spreads it will look more like the weathered pots.
Thanks every body for your responses!
Dalia..........nothing to do with what your pot looks like but I think you are over potting your Avocado.
IMO, that size of pot is way too big for the plant..........particularly at this time of year, you don't want a huge wodge of (damp ) compost around it.. I'd keep it in a smaller pot until it puts on more growth.
Thank you for that good advice.. I will repot it in a smaller pot now.
Have a nice day!
Hello Edd!
I have been meaning to trim the stem down based on the 12 inch rule, however, I have been procrastinating it, as it is a scary thing to do for a beginner planter!
I will go ahead and do that today!
Thanks again for your continued support! Much appreciated!
