    I agree it is not mahonia - does it flower at all?  I'm not sure what it is from just the leaves ....but I am sure others will be along soon who will knowimage

    Thanks very much for your suggestions - have managed to narrow it down at least and should be able to work it out when it next flowers (fingers crossed!)

    My money's on it being a Philadelphus.   I don't think the leaves are right for Kolkwitzia or Cornus.  If you look for some old seed pods then Philadelphus seed pods are in four parts.  If it has seed pods then post up an image as they are quite distinct.
