I agree it is not mahonia - does it flower at all? I'm not sure what it is from just the leaves ....but I am sure others will be along soon who will know

My money's on it being a Philadelphus. I don't think the leaves are right for Kolkwitzia or Cornus. If you look for some old seed pods then Philadelphus seed pods are in four parts. If it has seed pods then post up an image as they are quite distinct.

Not really extremely large. Just never been cut back like they do behind our house around the play area.
