Bare root roses

Hi

I'm expecting 7 bare root roses tomorrow (Friday), which I'm planning to plant in the ground at the weekend. I've just checked the weather forecast and the night temperature in my area on Saturday is expected to be below freezing. I know I should not plant them if the ground is frozen, but in this case the ground will not be frozen when planting but frozen later at night.

Please can someone advise me if I should go ahead and plant them in the ground or just keep them in a pot with dry compost until spring (as I've read from someone else's post the other day)?

Many thanks in advance!

air temperatures might well be freezing, but it takes prolonged sub zero temperatures to freeze the soil.

If it were me, I'd plant them.

  • Thanks Hostafan! I shall plant them.

  • I agree with Hosta and Verdun - get them in the ground - that's the best place for them - they'll be fine.

    Which roses are they? image

  • Thanks all you experts ???? They are mostly David Autin roses - A Shropshire Lad and Claire Austin to climb the sunny wall and New Dawn on the north and the fragrant Gertrude Jekyll, Margaret Merrill, etc for a narrow border. I read only yesterday in someone else's post that DA roses need more nutrient and water before get going so I shall bear that in mind.
  • Sorry I inserted a smilie from my phone and it came up as question mark, lots of them
  • Those sound lovely - we shall expect progress reports and photos when they bloom image
