My parents are giving me some seeds from there aquilegia plants however i cant sow them in situ now as where they will be planted currently has bedding in. Can i sow them in pots and plant out september or overwinter them in a coldframe as i want them to flower next year or will they require a cold treatment prior to germination.

Yes, you can sow in pots as soon as they seed. Some will germinate straightaway and others in the spring. Overwintering in a cold frame is ideal. I sowed some last year in August and they germinated within a week but they didn't grow big enough to flower this year, so by sowing now you may have a chance.
You can sow in pots and plant later, the seeds coming now are for next years new plants.
When reading up to plant mine they prefer dapple shade
Thanks thats great ill do that and see how they do. I am going to plant them in dappled shade too.
