New turf

As a BRAND NEW gardener, I laid turf last week,  (14ft x 12ft) having inherited a 'yard',

It's grown to around 4cm, so can I mow it? Can I walk/sit on it? Is it established enough? Help!

If you laid it last week, it will not have had time yet to put down roots.

  • thank you very much, i'm just a bit worried about the length of the grass, does that matter? How long shall I leave it? 3 weeks has been mentioned

No, not for quite a while yet, the poor thing needs water and rest - daily water if you are having no rain, and to be left well alone to allow the roots to grow down into the soil you carefully prepared for the turf before you laid it.   It can have a very gentle high as possibe cut in about 8 weeks to get the plants to bush up and make the grass thicker.  It is a mass of baby plants with their roots cut offf, be kind to it if you want it to serve you well for a long time.

  • thank you image will do

  • When watering i would recomend on watering deeply each time you water to encourage deep rooting and water before the heat of the day so that the lawn has time to dry before nightfall.
