Liquidambar

I have a friend with a Liquidambar that has produced a number of suckers and we wondered if this can be removed and grown on and if so how & when is the best time.

Are these gorgeous trees grafted as I had one that grew happily for 3 or 4 years and then suddenly mid summer died, though it had produced a few suckers which I had removed as one would with grafted plants.

If it is one of the clones e.g. Worpledon it will have been grafted on Liquidambar styraciflua rootstock.
