Any more information you can give us? How large is the acer and how large is the pot? How old is it? What did you pot it in, is there drainage and do you feed it?
Did you water it in the dry weather a couple of weeks ago? I forgot to water mine and one of them has lost a lot of its leaves. I think I got it watered just in time, but it's going to look a bit sad for the rest of the summer. Its difficult to say whether it's too late to save yours - you'll have to see whether the branches and twigs still seem alive.
You could try and leaf prune the damaged area. Japanese maples have a defence mechanism and sometimes produce a secondary set of leaves.I've done this on a bonsai acer before. I wouldn't worry too much, these plants have a knack of repairing themselves given a bit of TLC.
We had this with our acer - i cut it back and kept watering and feeding it and it did survive to come again the following year. It flourished best though when we planted it into the garden.

They also hate wind and this, coupled with lack of water dessicates them. I found it takes a lot of skill to keep acers in pots.
