How to keep Globemasters big?
can any of you green fingered experts enlighten me on how to keep my huge Globemaster alliums large?
about three years ago, I planted some in the rear garden and they were amazing that Year. Unfortunately, the past couple of years, they are much smaller.
how do I keep the ones in the front garden, which I planted last autumn, large?
many thanks

Like all bulbs they benefit from some feed, and this is best applied as the bulbs take up the goodness in the leaves. So watch for the leaves to start tyo die off, which has probably alrady happened, and start feeding. Don't delay.
Woodgreen, thanks for the advice, my alliums are nice and big at the moment, but next year...would you suggest just a general plant food?
Many thanks for your excellent response Woodgreen!
When would you suggest I remove the flower and stalk?
Thank you!
I usually use Tomorite for most things, especially as it is a tiny bit late now.It works quickly as it is available instantly. But usual blood, fish, etc would do nicelyas well, especially for next year. Strangely some of mine have done well this year and others less well. So somethging else may be happening too. But feed is essential, apply in spring as growth starts and the feed will be available at the right time.
I leave my flowers and stalks on for some time to continue the show, altho' you can take off the head and most of the stalk when colour is gone and seeds forming. Leave a couple of inches to mark the position of the bulb below, in case you forget where it is. You might plant something on top!!!
wonderful! Many thanks again for all of your help Woodgreen.
I can now stop stressing and enjoy the wonder of the globemasters!
Thank you!!
It really is amazing how different things are around the country, the alliums i planted in the autumn, haven't even flowered yet, and you guys are talking about them dieing down! Things have been very slow to get going up north
They look like the flowers are just about to start coming out any time now though! (i hope)
They may be a little slower if it is their first year?
Quite possibly, although i would say it's only really felt like spring up here for about a month now. It went from 3deg to 18deg in a space of a week. So more like wintersummer, with no spring hehe, so everything is all screwed, the daffs i planted only finnished flowering about 4 weeks ago.
Mine are going over too Andy and I'm just down the road from you, but I am in god's country
