Alcea / hollyhock

MrsGardenMrsGarden Posts: 3,951

I'm just back from the nursery with 3 Alcea Charter's Double's in white. I didn't realise they were hollyhocks until I looked online. The pictures look amazing.

Unfortunatly, there's a bit too much conflicting info online - drought tolerant, keep moist, full sun, shady site all mentioned!

So I'm going to put them where I think they will look nice and hope for the best! It is quite a dry site - sheltered from rain by trees but stays dry when watered. It will have sun/part sun almost all day and it will live behind a peonae and hydrangea (which is still quite small, one or the other may need moving in a few years).

  • What a coincidence! I have just acquired two Charter's Doubles in Apricot. I was thinking of putting them against the NW facing front wall of my house, which gets very little direct sunlght, bu tis damp, along with a couple of lupins. So the exact opposite if you!

I look forward to seeing what the verdict is!

Mine are now planted and as still small they aren't getting a lot of direct sun, i will wait and see. Good luck with yours paperflowers.

Hi Mrs Garden, I've grown some double hollyhocks from seed that was given to me, I haven't a clue what colour they are, only know that they are double.  I've planted them in a south facing border in well drained sandy soil and at the minute they are looking really healthy. We'll see how it goes image

I'm impressed - my green fingers don't extend to growing from seed yet. Hope they turn out well.
