no idea what it is ? but it has red flowers on...as u see it started with many blooms but few days ago I noticed it is suddenly looking pretty poorly...Why ?
Could be a wiegela, hard to tellwhen it's sick like that. I'd have a look at the root and see if anythings attacking it. Unless it's newly planted and been allowed to dry out
Ants produce Formic acid and it really does a lot of plants no good at all. I would prune the shrub back to healthy stems and get rid of the ants. It may be worth moving the shrub to another place with fresh soil and giving it a real good watering to get rid of any acid left on its roots.
Ants are a major pest. I've just had a rose and some lilies in two pots sicken and die in just a few days because ants made their nest in the compost. No warnng and plenty of watering so i'm seriosuly peeved.

its been there 3/4yrs now but i did notice an ants nest near it ...!

I didn't know that Berghill, I thought it was just the result of having the soil taken away from the roots

Death to any alkaline loving plants. Dianthus never recover and even the cuttings do not always take.

you & me both.. just went in green house & huge running lanes of them.. out came the ant powder...
