Thanks for your reply, we have a plastic 3 tier planter, which is sat on the soil, with stone around it. the 3 tier planter has summer bedding in it. I didn't know what to plant in the square beneath it. something of low speading perhaps?
One of the ground cover campanulas might be nice (think the variety is portenschlagia - although that spelling is probably wrong) it flowers profusely most of the summer for me, and keeps it's leaves in the winter too. It can spread a bit, but if your soil is surrounded by paving that would stop it.
