Tulip Bulbs
Hi All,
I hope someone can offer some advise on this as the results of googling seem to be mixed.
I had some beutiful red riding hood tulips which flowered about a month ago, the leaves fell off last week and I have removed the head (i think i saw monty doing this to prevent them seeding?)
So now i have some large stalks and the bulbs still planted.
Should i dig them up and if so leave all greens attached until they die back or cut the leaves etc?
Or should i levae them in the ground and if so cut back or not?

On GW last week Monty talked about Tulips in pots and how to deal with them once they die back. You can pull and dry them for next year, but he made it sound a bit of a pfaff and as if the chances of getting a similar display the following year would be really small. Reading between the lines, unless you are really committed and patient, I think he was suggesting that we should start afresh each year.
I am not sure if the same advice is true for those in the ground, but am sure a tulip expert will soon advise.
I am definitely taking all mine out... hopefully on Sunday. Daffs too... they were put in , in the most stupid of places (like behind a 6ft Holly bush??) so I need to take them all out and then put then back in a normal place.
I will be cutting them back and then putting them in one of the sheds.
Hi Nicky, how much do you cut them back?
When everything has gone brown you can just pull off the tops with your hands singy.
I tipped mine out of the pots today, crocuses and Iris reticulata all looked well, tulips were hardly worth saving. smaller than when I put them in there. I shall probably replant in late autunm and see what happens but not hopeful. Some not ready to be tipped out yet

The general advise regarding tulips is to start a fresh each year. Some varieties might grow back but most don't., sad, because mine this time were the best ever, with really good stems and blooms.
