Tree fern

I have 5 tree ferns which I began to wrap ready for the winter when I noticed that there was a thick layer of white fungus around the trunk of one of the ferns. It is also starting to go into the crown is this a problem? Or can it be left?

It is a problem with tree ferns, if the crown rots that will be the end the rain must have got in it. If you go on the web of rhs.org you might find something on there
