I think I used the last few puff of Bordeax mixture on my cherry tree, it did the job.. Sadly there won't be any more.. It will go the way of PBI's Cover Sheild which you used to sprinkle on newly sown seeds, it suppressed weed germination for 6 weeks giving time for ones seedlings to grow, but that has gone too..image The EU has a lot to answer for...  Telling us how much meat to put in our sausages or what exactly are 'Kimg Edwards potatoes as opposed to 'Kimg Edward type'..

Bordeaux mixture isn't fairy dust and its toxicology has been extensively tested - for example http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/carbaryl-dicrotophos/copper-sulfate-ext.html

So there are good reasons for stopping its use even if it is inconvenient for us gardeners.

I don't doubt the pernicious effects of copper suphate.

What irks me is the double standards. It is still OK for industrial quantities of it to be used by horticultural organisations but I can't use 3 tablespoonsful per annum of the stuff.

    Bonkers.

I am afraid that I am punctiliously law abiding. I once had an entire police station reduced to tears of mirth when I asked if it would be alright for me to cycle home without lights at night, my own having been stolen and I having gone to report the theft.

Well I got the joke about coppers, if no-one else did. image

Or maybe they're keeping quiet about it.

    Not offended at all, Buddyboy.

Laws for me, if they are unbiased and logical, are like a sort of grease that prevents friction in society. So long as everyone complies with the law, everyone gets on well together. But the law has to be unbiased and logical. The new law on Bordeaux misture is both biased and illogical. It says that industry can still use industrial quantities of copper but "the little man" can't have his twopence worth of the stuff.

Unfortunately, many laws are biased in favour of one group of people. And many of them are totally illogical. Another example of lunacy is the simple road sign at T junctions which commands all drivers to stop.

What it should say is "Stop and then proceed."
