Golden bamboo

My golden bamboo has 5 or 6 nice thick shoots coming up, suddenly one decides to turn a right angle and grow horizontal. Same happened last year and tha one grew for about 6 inches and then turned another right angle to grow upright again. Anyone got any ideas why?

There are some bamboos that have stems that zig zag, perhaps it's in the genes.
