Hi my mother has this rose that is getting a bit out of control, will it be ok to cut it back now. Also any ideas on what Rose plant it is.
Wait till it has finished flowering, then cut back. I was told years ago that March was the best time for pruning.
I'm hopeless with roses but someone told me to take them down by half after flowering to prevent root rock in windy Winter weather, and then prune hard on St Patrick's day (March 17th)
Someone on here will know all the ins and outs.
Looks like a shrub rose to me voyager, and yes you can prune by half right now, and as others have said it reduces the chance of wind rock, which can be detrimental to the health of the rose next year. Many roses are still full of flowers right now so keep an eye on the weather forecast and if it can wait then why not let it flower for a while and cut it back just before we have the really windy autumn weather.
BB great grannys know stuff. Especially Norn Iron ones!
I'd love to id it.
