Fruit trees
My son has recently moved to a new property, and there is a rather sad Proctor's Seedling apple tree in the garden - the tree has only one flowering branch sprouting from a decaying trunk. Is there anything that can be done to salveage the tree, such as gafting a cutting onto new rootstock - if so,how is this done?

Look up grafting on the web. E.g. http://www.fruitscape.co.uk/graft.html
In the old days, people used to shoot the tree with a rifle. The theory was that you shot it on the side that was not producing and this 'shocked' it back to life.
