I planted some seeds inside in February. The plats are now 4 leaves and about 1-2 inches tall. Just how long does this take to grow? Is this the right kind of size to expect after such a long time?

It would probaly be a bit bigger in a better year Bill. Mine are very small still but I shall be able to pot them up into individual pots now. Just waiting for a bit of warmth so they grow on. They are perennials so never as quick as annuals but they usually look good by the end of summer
I hope it will be the case this year

Hi nutcutlet, I definitely picked the wrong year to start gardening
I planted my shrubs a bit too hastily, but I am really chuffed by their recovery. They have all got new shoots and a couple have flower buds. The only one I am a little disappointed with is choisya. Its a dark green and not the yellow, but all the leaves are pale, but there are some new buds coming out.
As for the perennials, I failed with osteos, I have had a big learning curve as far as growing seeds. The veg seems okay, but the flowers are hit and miss. I lost some by watering with a watering can! I lost others by leaving the lid on the propagator. Others got too "leggy" on a South windowsill, fell over and withered.
I bought some geraniums and petunias which were pretty well developed. I have 1 purple flower on one petunia and 1 pink geranium, out of 20 each!

you're right Bill, you could have chosen a better year. Things will get better. Choisya would like a bitmore warmth. good that the veg are going OK though, You willhave learnt a lot. you may learn more when it goes wrong because it makes you think about it

The verbena do seem to start very slowly even in a good year until they suddenly take off!
yes yr right patsyD.. then they self seed anywhere and you cant get rid of them
.. thou i do love them and they come back year after year.. thou i have found mine have got bit woody and only re shooting from one side this year..
maybe time to pull them up and seed some more?
I've only managed to get 5 plants from all the seeds i've sown, like yours they are small but they grew well last week when it was warm.. not so much this week as it's turned to october again
I'll be taking cuttings this year as i found seeds a pain for these, too fussy and ages to germinate.
