Tasty Tips

Some kind interest has been  shown on something I mentioned elsewhere. So I wonder if others share my interest  in the simple uses of everyday garden products that don,t usually appear in more formal commercial diatribes. I said that I am in the habit of leaving some of my leaks to run to flower not only for the sheer beauty of the blossom in the veg garden but for the sake of taking a full head or three for a vase in the kitchen. There to pinch out a few petals to sprinkle onto a salad or into a sandwich. The difference this makes to an otherwise plane cheese sandwich is delicious.Have you a simple similar tip for the likes of me, too busy in the garden to achieve or study more esoteric foodie cookery but very happy to indulge in swift culinary delights?

Chive flowers are nice to eat in mixed salad. The bees like them too

I'll try that this year big ed, or next spring when they flower. Never thought about eating the flowers.

I've transplanted leeks into the garden for the flowers, but not tried eating them. I do eat chive flowers though which are tasty.

I also like calendula petals sprinkled on a salad or added to egg dishes. There's not a lot of flavour, but they're very pretty.

Yup, I've left the last of my leeks to run to seed. They're in front of a clump of ornamental alliums, so hopefully will prolong the display, but hadn't thought of using them as cut flowers/ salad additions. Maybe I'll try that with some, and leave the rest to ripen their seed which I'll use next year.

On this subject, I'm very partial to nasturtium flowers in a mixed salad. Roll on summer!
