Hi, I have a very small windy garden and I would like to plant a tree that grows to about 12' to 15' It will have to be planted very close to a fence, the soil is clay.any one got any ideas?
not really a good idea to plant any tree so close to a fence especially one which you want to grow so large, perhaps you should re-think.
How close to your house or drains, or those of other people?
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
....in my very small windy garden on the south coast, subject to wind from all directions, on heavy clay, I planted Sorbus vilmorinii about 1 foot from a 6 foot fence.... it's the only tree I know - 12-15 foot - that would fit the purpose. Some years it's better than others, as summer gales can strip some of the leaves...
however, fast growing, and small, are something of a contradiction in terms... but have a look at that one if you're interested...
Some crab apples would fit the bill, although some would be too tall. There are also dwarf cherries.
