Problem with Rhubarb

Does anyone else get slugs eating their rhubarb stalks ?.it is planted in the garden surrounded by grit(I,ve even put slug bait on the grit),but as soon as a stalk is a few inches tall the slugs seem to appear from everywhere.Any ideas?.

Too many slugs not enough rhubarb so put homemade, made to measure, copper collars around the base of each plant. Definitely allowed more crumbles to be made.
