I've got a gertrude jekyll rose shrub which i love , have just planted zepherine drouhin, now havign read a lot of bad things about it getting blackspot and never thriving thinking i may have to replace with another strongish pink climber, do you have to buy a particular climber of this rose or just another shrub and train?

...you might like to enquire with David Austin Roses but I believe the shrub and climbing versions of Gertrude Jekyll are just the same rose, as the shrub will throw up long canes which you can train to 6 or 8 foot.... I used to cut these off keeping it as a shrub... so I would buy another GJ in a container and plant that, if you really want another... they are so terribly thorny...

Plan to order with garden voucher got for our wedding)

  • I have James Galway which is a David Austin shrub/climber.  It grows to about 5ft which they say is suitable as a small climber.  It has a wonderful scent and has never suffered with any disease.

Shropshire Lad is lovely - but more of a peachy colour than a strong pink.
