I do trim off all the tatty leaves, I don't feed until I repot in Spring and they show signs of new growth. I do grow mine inside only though, bringing them into the GH soon. Just keep damp, not much water.
Dump the plant after its third year of producing.

if the mother plant is less than 3 years old , I'd give it a bit of a feed, If older, I'd ditch it.
