between a shed and a dark place

at the very back of my back garden i have a 5foot squared area with a shed on 1 side a brick wall on the opposite side and wooden fences on the other 2 sides with just a small path to the side,  there is a large silver birch right in the middle and nothing else seems to grow...   i have been advised to grow a few ferns there but does anyone else have any suggestions for me...

Look out for some woodland plants (I just searched for exactly that) as they'll not mind shade, not much water or competing with a tree for space. I've done this in a shady area under a tree in my garden and put a little bench seat there too and now it's a lovely area to sit

In a shady dry area I have ferns and Lily of the Valley, both seem happy there.
