To avoid cats leaving their mess on your garden/lawn put down plastic snakes. I have even visited a garden where they had lots of plastic snakes and people wondered what they were for. Cats don't seem to like them at all. They are cheap to buy and come in a variety of colours and certainly create a talking point. The only time i have a problem is when the grass is too long.
