Strange crinodendron friut?

Please can anyone shed any light on what I found growing on my crinodendron bush this morning?... instead of the usual crimson lantern flowers, a couple of shoots have appeared with what I can only describe as a cluster of "pearls" inside a brown pod ( same shape as the flowers ), these have fallen off this afternoon in the wind... are they some kind of fruit?... I have never seen anything like them. Thanks!

With the exception of some hybrids flowers are followed by fruits/seeds.

    That sounds OK to meimage

Can't grow them here - we're on solid chalk.

We have two huge ones here, dad grew from seeds, swiped off some one else's plant!

  • Just looked it up.  Such a pretty plant!  Says not fully hardy though.  Is that true?

  • Thanks so much everyone!!. This has flowered twice a year for 3 years but never had these following the flowers. Its now growing nicely in the ground after 2 years in a big pot. We planted it out minus pot and seems happy surrounded by sandy and rich soil areas .

It's hardy fo me, they have been here at least twenty years. It puts up with rain and wind coming off the Moor and at an altitude of 960 ft, which is always colder than at sea level temperatures.

  • Thanks Lyn.  Now need to work out where I could put one....
