Cutting back lawsoniana hedge

I have recently moved into a property that has a 5' thick 9' high lawsoniana hedge that clearly hasn't been cut for quite some time. There is a new flower border just in front of it and the hedge keeps off the morning sun.

I want to cut the hedge right back to 5' hight and 3' width. Will it survive and sprout out again or would this kill it.

don't go into old brown growth. It's highly unlikely to re-shoot.

If you cut back to bare branches, as Hostafan1 says, it will not re shoot. You can safely cut off the top quite severely but not the sides; just trim them.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
  • OK, that's what I feared.

    Many thanks for your advice.
