Does my apple tree have a future?

Before the end of summer my crab apple tree looked like a bat roost with hanging clumps of blackened leaves all over it and not a single green leaf anywhere.

It escaped felling due to the bad weather in the winter, but this spring it is covered in green leafy shoots as if nothing had happened.

It is a tenacious tree having survived rabbit damage many years ago and severe damage by sheep later. The previous year it produced more fruit than I could deal with.

I'm still in half a mind to take it down to prevent the spread of fire blight, but it seems a bit mean and there are no susceptible trees in my neighbourhood.

Does anyone know if it is likely to survive?
