Fruit / Wildlife Hedging

My deliver of 70 bare-root hedging plants arrived today - which I hope to plant this weekend. However, I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on how best to configure my hedge...

I have bought the following:

  • Blackthorn (25)
  • Elder, Common (15)
  • Cherry Plum (10)
  • Hazel, Common (20)

I want to create a double row using the 'W' format.

Am I best to plant the various types in 'clumps' - ie all the blackthorn, then all the elder etc? Or can I mix them up a bit more to add more colour / interest?

Mix them up, in a semi-random way - the one thing I'd say is look at the site and imagine the heights of the mature plants and try to group and space them to give it a rhythm or an overall shape that works in the landscape, rather than making it look regular and a bit static.image
