Herbs - Pots or In The Soil

TV - Chanel 8 - Made In Bristol............There is a gardening program called Gaz in The Garden which is helpful and very funny for the awkwardness of the presenters

John the expert suggested that you can place 2 or 3 different herbs in the same 12 " wide pot so they can be grown inside 

I can do this but is it better to plant out doors if at all possible

? What effect does being in pots have on the growth and flavour of "being indoors " please

I have an allotment and a back garden as options

I have bought Thyme , Rosemary and Sage in pots and different ones as seeds for sowing in the new year

Much better to grow them outside, but some die down in the winter unless they're indoors.
