One of my Delphinium Black Knights has just finished flowering and I'd like to let it go to seed as my mum would really like some. Can anyone give me some advice please? I've never collected seed from delphiniums before.
Leave till the head goes brown Lena you ll know when it's ready as the pods will open and when you shake the stem the seeds rattle cut off the stem and tip upside down into a paper bag , Black Knights a lovely one I grow it too
You won't get more Black Knights - you'll get a vast array of different colours and sizes. I grow all my delphiniums from seed. They germinate by the hundred (very willing) and it's always a nice surprise to see how they turn out.
Apophthegm - a big word for a small thought. If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
Yes true, I grew my original Black Knight from bought seed and even then some had white "bees" , just grown some collected from a pink,Astolat, and some are lilac very pretty, had an almost grey one from Pacific Hybrids seed but it didn't come back the following year, shame it was lovely
Thanks for the advice. It's rather addictive collecting and sowing seed - and it will be nice to be able to share it with my mum as she loves gardening too... hopefully I might have enough seeds to keep some to sow for myself too
