The price of compost

Morning, glorious in notts this morning. May I ask, would you say that three bags of 60l compost for ??10 is good value? Thanks

3 for 12 euro 56 litre bags (grow wise) is normal, 3 for 2 shamrock 75 litres is usually 16  euro. Westlands this year is good 75 litre bags 2 for 10.

can do better, aldi €1.49 for 40 litres seems good stuff and unbeatable price wise. been out of stock recently, wonder why

smaller sized bags of compost attract VAT in ireland which is why you don't see so much of them.

So much depends on what type of compost you are buying.  Some of them have been dreadful in recent years, and even if given away free would not have been worth the cost of going to collect it!!   I  intended to buy just one bag to test the quality this year before buying lots, but my dear OH could not resist the bargain the ones bught looked to be!  If they are OK then all well and good, peat free and organic, but experience tells that sometimes these are of poor quality.   Like everything else in life, you get - often  -  what you pay for.  Do hope you are lucky and have good stuff for your plants.

Thanks for the replies. The brand is J Arthur Bowers. I think I might just give it a go.

I have just purchased bq compost with added john innes and I must say it is great stuff,

I had problems with bq compost last year but this one is great for young plants and seedlings.

very fine and no twigs or lumps.

Bought B&Q Verve compost, the worst I have ever bought ,absolute rubbish. Just purchased some from Homebase which looks really good.

Tootles,, yesterday one of our allotmenteers bought a trailer load of top quality compost from a local county council in Camarthenshire for ?? 10 , i was wondering if your local one or any near bye sell it ,as it seems they sell very cheaply and like to get rid hence the low price maybe worth a try, the quality is usually very high

I agree with you alan but I bought the one with added john innes and it is a lot better than the verve compost.

Just finished my last bag of Westlands (good stuff) and bought 3 bags of Asda MP 70 litres for £10 9as I was in the store anyway. It is rubbish for seeds, clumping and woolly, a clearly visible mix of different coloured stuff ranging from dark brown to almost white shreddings. No way you could sprinkle a fine layer to cover small seeds.It will be fine for what I plan to use it for - bedding plants in pots that I will top up with liquied fertiliser. For the extra £1 I'll go back to Westland

Have the same experience of Asda compost - it also dries out easily, too easily, OK for filling in pots, raised beds etc.

Homebase is a good compost and always on 4 for 3.

I had same experience with the Asda one too although it was a freebie from a friend. I bought some Westland a few days ago but I have to say I'm not overly impressed with it either. Will try Homebase next time blairs!
