Ugly planter

Good evening! I have a tall ugly metal container which I am wanting to plant up and give some height behind some shorter pots. I found it in my new garden and am skint so I'm determind to make use of it. My fianc??e wants to take it to the tip but I promised him I will make it look pretty.... So bearing this in mind I would like to know your favourite trailing plants to hide my containers' ugliness. Annual or perennial. Thanks!

  • If hiding it is the desired outcome, try painting it up or covering the pot itself. This is an instant fix that plants can enhance rather than cover. A nice (if a little more labour intensive) option is to mosaic your planter with small broken coloured crockery (free) , small coloured pebbles (quite cheap) or mosaic tiles (great colours available, but pricey). Just make sure your planter is sturdy enough to support the extra weight, and use an appropriate exterior adhesive.

    Any good?

Do you have any creeping Jenny, (lysimachia reptens) that's useful for trailing or a small leaved ivy. Maybe nasturtiums in the summer
  • We have discussed painting it with metal paint so that is an option Tilley, but I don't think I would have the patience to mosaic it as its huge! It's actually quite a nice shape...sort of oval.
  • Bit of mammoth project, I know!! You can get some wicked colours and textures in Hammerite, which also comes in spray cans. Be nice to make the most of the shape too. Whatever you do, can you post some piccies?

Yes Alice, photo would help, easier to visualise potential options then. How tall is it?
  • I like the idea or nasturtiums, Petal.

Perhaps if the planter was painted a deep purple, with the orange and yellow blooms cascading over the edges...
  • Ooh ok I will have to take a pic tomorrow in the light. It's about up to my belly Pennine petal
