Bare rooted aquilegia

Hi I brought some bare rooted aquilegia from wilkinsons but they must of been in the packet a while as they had already had five inch shoots but very white and leggy should I leave them to their own devices or cut back foliage

    Hi Steven,

    I'd cut of anything long and straggly but leave the rest, it will green up, give them a good soaking but don't keep them wet.

    Thank you I potted them about a week ago hoping they might pick up the leaves are nice and green but at the end of five inch white stems would you advise feeding or just watering

    If you have potted them up only a week ago, I would say that they are ok at the moment. Let them develop a good root system in the pot and then they will be able to produce some new leaves, everything is so behind schedule this year anyway, good luck.

    I agree, wait & see. They should be fine if the pots are now tucked up by a wall ie in shelter for the time being. They do tend to develope longish tap roots, so dont always transplant easily when bigger plants.

    The season is at least 2 weeks behind normal, so plenty of time to decide where you ultimately want the plants to grow. By then they should look better J.

    I also bought some of these from Wilkinsons and I haven't long planted them, it does say on the packet that if any has grown in the packet it doesn't affect them, they had lots of white leggy bits on them but now just over a week later they have got some nice green leaves on them and are doing well image I bought some of the mixed colours and the black ones too image

    I left the leggy bits on without cutting them off if that helps.

    I would cut the leggy bits off, this will helps stimulate fresh new growth.

    Hope you guys get your aqualegias going well, this time next year they will be all over your garden, they spread seed very easily.

    I don't have a garden as such Leonette, I have a bit of soil thats about 6ft by 5ft so I grow most things in containers, I have a new 8ft by 6ft greenhouse that needs putting up, (waiting for my daughter to help me with it) I built a raised bed which I built up with bricks today on the concrete where the garage used to be, which is empty just yet lol I put the aquiligia in a container and they have started to grow quite well, I grew some from seed last year and they are growing back well too image
