Clearly NOT a lemon tree!

Been waiting three years for lemons to appear! Guess this isn't a lemon tree! However I would like to identify it if possible. The image is of one detached twig with the seed pod at the bottom. Seed pods are barrel shaped, green, then red/orange then dried to black. Contains four brown seeds. Never noticed any flowers in spring. More of a mallow than a tree or shrub.

It looks a bit like a very miserable quince fruit.image

Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
  • Hi dovefromabove I will take a pic of the whole thing tomorrow.

nutcutlet, I bow to your obviously superior intellect and accept that it cannot be a mallow

And pansyface I can assure you it is not a fruit, miserable or otherwise!

Try googling 'wintersweet' -web page and images. UFEI website(ecosystem etc) has an image of the fruit which looks identical.

Chimonanthus praecox is the scientific name

    good luck
