What sort of hedge are they? How long have they been planted?
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
There is no magic solution to this, cutting back and reshaping as you suggest is the right answer. His only other option is to watch it get worse as the hedge grows even further out of control.
How about printing out a few articles from this site and the RHS (e.g. http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/Profile.aspx?pid=398 ) on how to keep hedges in trim and showing them to him?
thanks for the replies, im not sure of type, its not laylandia or laural, its been planted for a very long time years and years
