What to plug a hole in the garden with???

I'm trying to decide what to put in a space left by digging out a honeysuckle. If you see the photo I have a Hibiscu on one side and a cupboard on the other. I'm looking for something that is climbing and trailing and must work hard attracting the bees and the butterflies. The site is north facing, fairly sheltered from the sun in clay soil.

I would also like to get a climbing rose in addition that I can run up the side of the cupboard and along the top of the window to make it look country cottage-ish. The Honeysuckle never seemed to be happy there...never flowered very well and often seemed to get a white powdery stuff on the leaves.

So any suggestions would be great.

Surely, if you want to plug a hole, you need a plug plant?

Seriously, though, folks, I wonder if there's an old-fashioned single-flowered rose that rambles?

And are/were you a fan of Journey into Space?

Not bad for a Sunday morning Steve  image

The ground will be very dry there - next to the house and surrounded by other things - which is why your honeysuckle didn't thrive. Did you intend putting a rose in that same site? If so, you'd need to get a bit of goodness into the soil and keep it well watered, fed and mulched to get the best from it.

I think you might suffer from lack of light coming in to the house though! image

Minor problem FG.  Cut it back around the window, eventually.

Definitely dig in a load of compost/wrm before planting.

Oh come back Basil Brush....all is forgiven!!!
And yes I am a fan of Journey into Space....I have the CD's sets for some of the stories and they help me get of to sleep some nights.

I'm not too fussed about the lack of light through the window...It's the kitchen window and first thing in the morning light is that last thing I want when making my first cuppa tea.

I would probably put the rose at the frontof theflower bed (which does need rebuilding and edging with timber) so it's really something for the corner that will like the shade. I plan to leave things for the moment anyway and dig in a lot of compost in there once the other stuff has flowered early next year and the Hibiscus will get a good hack back as it's only had some light trims for the past few years

I take it you're going to guide it over the shed/cupboard? You'll get lots of suggestions of suitable varieties as it's a shady north facing spot. I'm not knowledgeable re roses, but there are loads of people here who are. When you're ready to go, start a new thread for it  so that you get the right responses  image

  • Thanks very much Fairygirl & Steve 309...once I've gotten my finger out and got things done I'll start a new thread

Journey Into Space was repeated on Radio 4 Extra a few months ago which was when I first came across it.  David Jacobs (whom my mother knew years and years ago) was playing Jet.

I think it's a great series Steve...of it's time of course but a lot better than the tosh we get on TV and radio these days. Just wish they would realease more of the Dick Barton stuff and the Paul Temple series
